Dispute Resolution - Alberta

The Insurance Consumer Complaint Process is designed to help you resolve your dispute with your insurer. If you want to complain about unfair treatment by your broker, adjuster or insurer, you can contact  the Alberta Insurance Council and/or the Alberta Superintendent of Financial Institutions. ​

Alberta Treasury Board and Finance is responsible for overseeing the Insurance Consumer Complaint Process. Several options are available to get your insurance claim settled.

List of Alberta insurers’ Complaint liaison officers/ombudspersons will help you identify a contact person for each insurer.

Alberta Superintendent of Financial Institutions

The ASFI office of Alberta Finance regulates, in part, the insurance business in the province under the Insurance Act.

ASFI monitors the solvency of provincially incorporated insurance companies. It also licenses insurance companies and monitors the regulation of insurance agents and adjusters, which the Alberta Insurance Council manages. To contact ASFI:

Alberta Insurance Council

The Alberta Insurance Council (AIC) is the regulatory body responsible for licensing and disciplining insurance agents, brokers and adjusters. In addition to these responsibilities, it investigates complaints into the actions of insurance companies in Alberta. The Insurance Council has 2 offices:
