Industry Settlement Tables

Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) is promoting virtual Industry Settlement Tables for our member companies operating in Alberta between October 24, 2022 to November 7, 2022. After two successful events held in Ontario 2021, and based on member feedback, IBC is confident the first round of Settlement Tables for the Western Region will provide an important opportunity to resolve accident benefit and/or personal injury matters.

An insurance company that wishes to participate will use the virtual format of their choice to host the sessions.  Insurers will work with their internal team to identify suitable files for the Settlement Tables. Once files are selected, the insurance company will communicate directly with plaintiff counsel to discuss participation in the Settlement Tables and choose a mutually-agreeable date in the two-week window between October 24th to November 7th. An announcement on the Settlement Tables will be made to legal and government audiences on Monday, August 29th.

The Settlement Tables are an opportunity for parties to negotiate a mutually agreed-upon settlement and to avoid the risk, cost and time associated with the court process. The benefit of Settlement Tables are amplified due to the lingering impacts of the pandemic and the ongoing delay in cases working their way through the court system. Participation provides an opportunity to resolve cases that otherwise might languish in court and provides closure sooner for all those involved in the litigation process.  Additionally, it demonstrates the industry's willingness to be flexible, as well as helpful, in the face of ongoing backlogs in our court system.

IBC will post about the Industry Settlement Tables on ibc.ca.
