The Great British Columbia ShakeOut

Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) is committed to raising earthquake awareness and preparedness.  This year, IBC is a presenting sponsor of The Great British Columbia ShakeOut 2012.

On Thursday, October 18th at 10:18 a.m., you are invited to join thousands of people who will Drop, Cover, and Hold On for the annual drill.

Approximately 5,000 mostly small earthquakes are recorded in Canada each year. In the past 100 years, at least nine earthquakes in or near Canada have registered a magnitude greater than 7. Participating in the ShakeOut keeps the issue top of mind and helps you better prepare to survive and recover from a potential major earthquake.

Here’s how you can participate:

  1. Today: Register yourself or your organization to be counted in the 2012 ShakeOut Drill.
  2. Between now and October 18: Consider what may happen when an earthquake shakes your area. Plan what you will do now to prepare to protect yourself and recover quickly.
  3. On Thursday, October 18, 10:18 a.m. Drop, Cover, and Hold On: See this page for what to do if you have a disability or an activity limitation.
  4. Download the BC ShakeOut audio "drill broadcast" and play on October 18 at 10:18am. Using these resources can make your drill more interesting and educational.
