ULC-S338/98: Immobilizers Meeting the National Standard of Canada
Automobile Theft Deterrent Systems
IBC developed ULC-S338/98 with a coalition of interested parties, including consumers, insurers, law enforcement representatives, vehicle manufacturers, after-market security system suppliers and the Underwriters’ Laboratories of Canada. The coalition researched theft deterrent standards in other parts of the world, including the United Kingdom, Australia and Europe.
The Motor Vehicle Safety Act (re: electronic immobilizers)
In September 2007, Canada’s Motor Vehicle Safety Standards began to require that all new light-duty, non-emergency vehicles (cars, vans, light trucks and SUVs) be equipped with an electronic immobilization system that meets either the National Standard of Canada ULC-S338/98 or the European Standard UNECE/97.
Copies of the National Standard of Canada can be purchased from Underwriters’ Laboratories of Canada (ULC) at www.ulc.ca.
