About the Role
We use a wide range of data and intelligence to achieve four objectives:
- Help insurers identify fraud through integrated advanced analytics and investigations;
- Enhance and enable cross-insurer investigations coordinated by Équité;
- Lead stakeholder in vehicle and hard-asset recover & identification services; and
- Support law enforcement, regulators, professional colleges and other public investigative agencies to identify criminals and bring them to justice. We will also endeavour to raise public awareness about consumer scams: how they work and how to detect and prevent them.
The Data Engineer, reports to the Director, Head of Technology Solutions and requires the ability to anticipate needs, think critically, and offer solutions to problems with a high level of professionalism and confidentiality. The Data Engineer role is primarily responsible for providing technical and data leadership for the application development team(s). Working with the Director, Head of Technology Solutions and the data & analytics team, the role will ensure best practices in creating and maintaining data architecture and related standards to ensure the foundation which reflects the data needs and concerns of the members.

Specific accountabilities include:
- Create and maintain data architecture, data management standards and conventions, data naming standards, and metadata standards to ensure effective availability, scalability, security, and integrity of data assets
- Develop and maintain conceptual, logical and physical data models
- Setup the physical data model including all physical database configurations such as indexes, tablespaces, table partitions, table constraints, and relationships
- Design, build and implementation of data pipelines onto AWS from a variety of input data source formats, frequencies and latencies
- Own the data mapping, business logic, transformations and data quality
- Maintain and support existing platforms and evolve to newer technology stacks and architectures
- Utilize AWS exciting features to help drive rapid business insights and leverage stronger analytical and data science capabilities
- Work closely with our Data Science and Analytics teams to leverage opportunities within our data for insights and business value
- Work with a broad base of business stakeholders, vendors and insurance members in a highly collaborative environment
- Other projects/duties as assigned for the overall benefit of the organization and its partners.
Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience as a data or software engineer, including not-for-profit or NGO areas
- Bachelors Degree; MS in Computer Science preferred
- Strong design & hands-on experience with DBMS (SQL Server), Hive and Spark
- Experience with data modelling and Data Model Driven Approach
- Experience with AWS/Azure Cloud environment
- Proficiency in Python
- Passion for engineering and maintaining data repositories to enable analytics and machine learning
- Strong organizational, collaboration, planning and communication skills. Impeccable attention to detail
- Results-focused approach and strong work ethic
- Energized by a fast-paced environment
- Able to maintain a high level of integrity and discretion in handling confidential information.
- Scientific mind set to solve problems
- Experience in the P&C insurance industry a strong asset
- Comfortable and excels within remote work
