Insurance Bureau of Canada invites you to attend its 21st Annual Financial Affairs Symposium. This half-day event is designed to inform industry leaders on the latest developments and factors affecting the Canadian P&C insurance industry.

Jonathan Turner is Senior Vice President & CFO of Swiss Re's Canadian operations, including the company's Property & Casualty and Life & Health reinsurance operations in both Canada and the English Caribbean.  Jonathan joined Swiss Re in November 2010, having previously spent 12 years with Ernst & Young's Insurance Audit practice, where he worked with a variety of P&C and Life & Health clients on both assurance and advisory engagements in both the United Kingdom and Canada.

President & CEO, Insurance Bureau of Canada

Appointed Insurance Bureau of Canada’s President and CEO in 2009, Don has a successful track record of over 25 years in the property and casualty (P&C) insurance industry. He has a strong foundation in the public and private sectors, having worked for Alberta’s Department of Environment and the National Research Council in Nova Scotia early in his career.

CEO, Global Risk Institute

Richard is an Adjunct Professor of the Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto and chair, of the Advisory Board of the Mind Brain Behaviour Hive at the same University. In 2014, Richard was awarded the Visionary Award by the organization Women in Capital Markets for work during his career on the issue of sponsoring gender diverse management teams and boards in order to produce better companies. He also received the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for community service and the Arbor Award from the University of Toronto for his work with the school.

Steve Lee is a Partner in the Financial Services Organization group of Ernst & Young office in Toronto.  Steve has over 25 years of audit experiences with extensive knowledge in P&C insurance industry. Steve has led various accounting and auditing technical workshops internally and externally and have actively participated as a conference speaker/moderator in P&C industry conferences.


Balz Grollimund

Head Treaty Underwriting, Canada & Engl. Caribbean, Swiss Re

Since September of 2016, Balz Grollimund has been heading the Treaty Underwriting team for Canada and English Caribbean business at Swiss Re. In this role, he is responsible for the property and casualty lines of business. Prior to his underwriting role, he was heading the Earthquake team within the Catastrophe Perils unit of Swiss Re. In that role he was responsible for overseeing the underwriting tools the company uses to assess earthquake and Tsunami risks for treaty and single risk businesses, supporting the development of non-traditional risk transfer instruments, as well as providing expert advice in all aspects related to geological hazards.


Sanjay Khanna

Senior Consultant, Strategy, Ontario, Insurance Bureau of Canada

Sanjay is a nationally recognized expert on strategic foresight and global megatrends including the societal impacts of climate change. From 2011- to 2015, he was a visiting scholar at Massey College, University of Toronto, where he developed a strategic framework for capitalizing on, and adapting to the unique 21st century risk environment. Prior to working at the intersection of business, academia, and public policy, Sanjay served as a strategic research and communications consultant in Silicon Valley, where he worked with multinational technology firms on ideation, innovation, and communications initiatives. He was trained in scenario planning by the founders of the renowned Royal Dutch Shell Scenario Planning Team.

Avery Shenfeld is Managing Director and Chief Economist at CIBC, having been with the firm since 1993. He holds a Ph.D. in economics from Harvard University. One of the country’s most sought after commentators, he was ranked as the top economist in a recent survey of Canadian institutional equity investors. Avery follows economic developments and their implications for financial  and asset markets.

David is an institutional portfolio manager responsible for clients with fixed income specialty mandates including P&C insurance companies, public sector organizations and pension plans.  He joined Phillips, Hager & North Investment Management, a division of RBC Global Asset Management, in 2008 from Goldman Sachs & Co. where he had been a Vice President of Structured Credit Products.

Werner Muehlemann. Mr. Muehlemann was appointed to his current position of Senior Vice President and Managing Director in December 2014. He oversees Intact Financial Corporation invested assets as well as those of its affiliates, assorted mutual funds and selected special purpose portfolios for institutional investors. In his role, he is responsible for the development and implementation of value-added investment strategies and portfolio management techniques for $15 billion in assets.

Alodie has over 24 years experience in the Financial Services industry, specializing in Insurance, and
brought to bear her deep technical skills in leading nationally the 2011 IFRS conversion. Alodie works
collaboratively with her clients and leverages her broad relationships to bring to her clients the expertise
of the entire firm. She is a member of the OSFI Insurance Advisory Committee,
a former advisor to the Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) Financial Affairs Committee and regular
speaker at events organized by the Canadian Insurance Accounting Association, the IBC, the Canadian
Insurance Financial Forum and the Institute of Corporate Directors.

Danny is a Chartered Professional Accountant and a Partner with Deloitte’s Toronto office. He is the National Tax Leader for the Financial Services Industry. He has been with the firm for 27 years, of which 23 have been devoted to the practice of indirect taxes. In between his time at Deloitte, Danny worked 5 years at a major Canadian bank, responsible for managing over $100 million of indirect taxes.


David McGown

An accomplished executive leader with experience in communications, policy, government relations and corporate development, David brings in-depth knowledge of the financial and public sectors to corporate decision-making. Prior to joining IBC in 2015, he held senior leadership roles at Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce over a span of 28 years, most recently serving as its Vice-President for Government, Regulatory and Public Affairs. He began his career in research at Queen’s Park and then as an economist in the Department of Finance in Ottawa.

Daniel Shum is a Partner in Deloitte’s Financial Services practice and the National Insurance Leader for Consulting. Daniel has over 16 years of experience working in the insurance industry in Canada and the U.S. His focus is on strategy and implementation. Daniel’s recent relevant experience includes advising the industry on large scale business transformation and trends in innovation. He has advised and led the selection of multiple new insurance back office platforms and has successfully implemented and delivered their end solutions.
