What is Optional Coverage?
Additional protection – also known as optional coverage – covers perils that are not automatically included in a home insurance policy.
Different risks are inherent in different regions. You may want to consider earthquake coverage if you live in an earthquake-prone region, such as British Columbia. Also prone to earthquakes is the region from the St. Lawrence River Valley to the Ottawa Valley, including Quebec City, Montreal and Ottawa. Your insurer may also be able to advise you on what you can do to reduce the risk of earthquake damage to your home.
Earthquake coverage generally covers loss or damage to your property caused by the actual shaking of the earth. Learn more about what is included and excluded with earthquake insurance.
Sewer backup coverage is useful in some low-lying areas, especially if your area has combined storm and sanitary sewers. You may also want to install a back-flow prevention device, where permitted by local codes. Learn more about sewer backup coverage.
